HotLoop Edge overview
Edge is a box bolted next to a line. It reads the machine, runs the rules on the machine, keeps working when the WAN goes down, and tells the rest of the plant what it saw. Think Ignition Edge, built in Go, with the same write gate as everything else.
It has everything IoT has, and two things on top.
What Edge adds
Section titled “What Edge adds”- Edge publish and store-and-forward. It publishes everything it reads upstream as a Sparkplug B edge node. When the link dies it buffers to disk and replays in order when the link comes back, so the historian upstream gets the outage backfilled and not a hole. Readings go to memory while the broker confirms them and to disk only when it stops, and a test cuts the uplink under load, kills the process mid-outage and counts every reading. A hard kill with the link up can still cost about one poll of readings, and the page says so, with the numbers.
- The OPC UA server. Read-only and secured. The SCADA you already own sees every tag with no new driver, and Ignition 8.3.9 has read it end to end. It is off until you turn it on.
The local screens and logic keep running with the uplink down, and a test boots the real binary against a link that swallows everything to prove it. A box that reboots during a WAN outage comes up with its screens and its alarms, where before 4.18.10 it crash-looped with no screens and no alarms until the WAN came back. Dashboards are the screens, and they’re in IoT. An HMI write that names a human, a PIN or a badge on a shared panel, isn’t built yet. It’s on the roadmap.
What it doesn’t have
Section titled “What it doesn’t have”No fleet, no multi-site and no scheduled reports. Those are the Gateway’s, and they aren’t in the Edge binary.
Databases
Section titled “Databases”SQLite, PostgreSQL or TimescaleDB, from the same binary. The chart and the Quadlet units run TimescaleDB by default, and 90 days of history is kept unless you change it. In the chart that is database.type, and HOTLOOP_DB_TYPE=sqlite puts the box on a file with no database container. The lineup has the table.
Installing it
Section titled “Installing it”The Edge install page has Helm and Podman Quadlet, with the commands. Moving a site from IoT to Edge to the Gateway keeps every device, tag, entity, automation, alarm, user and hour of history, and the lineup says what has and hasn’t been run.
